Before You Start An Online Business, Take a Moment
Our world of commerce has been remapped by the internet. Buying and selling goods and services is totally different than it was 15 years ago, and more changes are on the way. A new entrepreneur simply must consider and include the internet in any marketing strategy. With all those choices, what is the first step?
Prior to choosing what course to take, just take a few moments to consider a couple of things. What is mooving you to set up an online business? Are you inspired to make money or only to give value. Maybe you want to do both. The choice is yours, and what is important is that you choose something that will serve your true intent.
First: A “Type A” business person is driven to selling something and creating as much profit as possible. So long as the potential for great return is there, the particular product or service is secondary. Type A wants big returns.
Second: Money is secondary to your primary intent, which is letting others know about your favorite topic, cause, or issue. You understand that you have a certain responsibility to communicate and you are very clear with your intent. This is part of who you are. Making money is a byproduct of your true passion.
Third: This is a hybrid of the first and second models and is where most people operate. They believe making money online is important. Of equal importance is giving value to others. It is possible and desirable to deliver value and make money at the same time. These three operating principles are quite simple, but also clearly relevant to doing business online. As you wade through the millions of choices of products and services, its vitally important to remember who you are and what you are truly wanting.
Being clear about true intentions helps eliminate confusion. On the other hand, being unaware of motivating factors and values can be time consuming and frustrating. It’s good to know the “why” behind doing business. Otherwise, there is no ability to focus and move toward an acceptable result.
Entrepreneurs seem to enjoy creating something new, and this is obvious when starting a business. There is an excitement to any new venture, and part of that results from the vision behind it. That is why it’s important to ask ourselves who we are and where we want to go.
Try this. Take some time today, and go somewhere quiet so you will be away from work, kids, and others. Do whatever you need to do to find calm. If you meditate, pray, use music, or nature to get quiet, do that. Now ask yourself regarding your reason to do business online. Is it for money, a cause, or both. What’s most important to you. When the business is successful, how will it look. What will you be like once it’s successful? What will this mean to your life?
The exercise only helps you see what you know. It doesn’t create anything you haven’t put in place. Try being with it and see where it takes you.
