Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School: While a current widower assists a dying mishap sufferer it sets in motion a journey to find the poor man’s long lost love at a school reunion. This leads to a ballroom dance school and a dull, hokey, excessively sentimentalized tale. Cast includes Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, Sean Astin, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Donnie Walhberg, David Paymer, Camryn Manheim, Adam Arkin, Sonia Braga, and Elden Henson. (103 minutes, 2006)

Pauline & Paulette: Charming, emotional film about 2 siblings, the psychologically retarded Pauline (Van der Groen), and Paulette (Petersen), a charismatic cloth shop owner and amateur opera diva whom Pauline cherishes. While destiny brings the 2 together under one ceiling, Paulette tries to push Pauline out of her life. This film was a Victor of 5 Belgian Plateau Prizes, the film characteristics momentous behaviors by 2 legendary Belgian actresses and marks the characteristic debut of cowriter and director Debrauwer. Cast includes Dora Van der Groen, Ann Petersen, Julienne De Bruyn, Rosemarie Bergmans, and Idwig Stephane. (78 minutes, 2001)

Lost Boundaries: This is a penetrating, well-meaning if dull-moving account of a committed, light skinned Negro physician (Ferrer, in his debut) who (with his family) passes for white in a tiny New Hampshire town. Cast includes Beatrice Pearson, Mel Ferrer, Richard Hylton, Susan Douglas, Canada Lee, Rev. Robert Dunn, and Carleton Carpenter. (99 minutes, 1949)

The Fog: A thick haze from the Pacific hangs over a Northwest seaside village, bringing with it murderous and vengeful ghosts. Lame redo of John Carpenter’s 1980 film modifies the structure but does not improve on the first edition. Cast includes Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Selma Blair, DeRay Davis, Kenneth Welsh, Adrian Hough, Sara Botsford, and Rade Sherbedgia. (100 minutes, 2005)

Commandos: Stereotype-filled war drama with typical structure; Italian commandos, led by a few stalwart Americans, need to secure a vital retreat in the North African desert before Allied landings. Cast includes Lee Van Cleef, Jack Kelly, Giampiero Albertini, Marino Marie, Pierre Paulo Capponi, and Duilio Del Prete. (89 minutes, 1964)

Belle de Jour: Bunuel’s wry and upsetting story of a virgirial newlywed who works the night switch in a high-style Parisian brothel, unbeknownst to her spouse. Bunuel’s recipe of stunning topic belies the acute humor of his script (cowritten with JeanClaude Catriere). Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli, Genevieve Page, Francisco Rabal, and Pierre Clementi. (100 minutes, 1967)

Rhapsody in August: Average (by his estimations) little Kurosawa piece in reference to the hurtful rememberings of a Japanese woman who recollects the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WW2. Gere, in a hyped up cameo, doesn’t appear too out of place as a Japanese American member of the old lady’s lengthened family. Cast includes Sachiko Murase, Richard Gere, and Narumi Kayashima. (98 minutes, 1991)
