When asked to simply give up, and receive power and riches, the Spartan leader refuses the offer. Instead, he and 300 of his best men stood against the whole of Xerxes army, and kill thousands before finally being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the attackers.
Lease A Cop: Chicago cop Reynolds is delayed after his botched hotel medication bust leaves half twelve lifeless. An eyewitness hooker helps him track down the bullet-happy slaughterers. Burt appears strained but is eager to work with the hooker. Cast includes Burt Reynolds, Liza Minnelli, James Remar, Richard Masur, Dionne Warwick, Bemie Casey, Robby Benson, and Michael Rooker. (96 minutes, 1988)
The Rookie (1990): Veteran detective Nick Pulovska, working in the auto theft division, has discovered German crime boss Strom is heading a large auto theft ring. In attempts to capture Strom, Nick’s partner is killed. The case is transferred to the homicide division. He is taken off the case, and given a new partner. He disobeys orders and he and his new partner are out to finish what Nick had started.
Casino Royale: This is an old school James Bond adventure. The humor is gone, and a tough and gritty 007 is trying to take down Le Chiffre, the banker for terrorists. Bond must defeat Le Chiffre in a huge money poker tournament to help the C.I.A. capture him.
So Evil My Love: (1948) 109 A phenomenal expression of corruption. The villain Milland drags blameless Todd into larceny at cost of Fitzgerald. Cast includes Ray Milland, Ann Todd, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Leo G. Carroll, Raymond Huntley, Martita Seek, and Hugh Griffith. (109 minutes, 1948)
Far and Away: Scrappy, mud-meager Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the comparably feisty baby girl of a prosperous landowner, and together they cruise for America to seek their final fate in the 1893 Oklahoma land hurry. Superlative automobile for Tom and Nicole, who are both attractive and involving; complication is a drastic absence of tale to fill the eases between quarrel scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes, 1992)
The Senator Was Indiscreet: Humor-playwright Kaufman’s only directorial fling turns out relatively well, with Powell as Senator whose notebook causes embarrassment. Cast includes William Powell, Ella Raines, Peter Lind Hayes, Arleen Whelan, Ray Collins, and Hans Conried. (147 minutes, 1974)
Presumed Innocent: D.A. Rusty Sabich has been accused of murder. His former lover, and co worker in the D.A.’s Office, has been murdered, and the evidence points toward him. He now must figure out just whom the murderer really is to prove his innocence.
