Mr. Quilp: Amusing lyrical rendition of Dickens’ The Old Interest Shop with melodies by Newley and lyrical score by Elmer Bernstein. Lighthearted till last reel while it goes earnest in the Dickens vein. Cast includes Anthony Newley, David Hemmings, David Warner, Michael Hordern, Jill Bennett, and Sarah Jane Vadey. Ah, Wilderness: Strong Americana in this adaptation of Eugene O’Neill play in reference to turn-of-the-century little town life, concentrating on a boy facing complications of adolescence. Rooney, playing the younger sibling, steals the show in lyrical redo of Summer Holiday. Cast includes Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, Cecilia Parker, Mickey Rooney, and Bonita Granville. Gorky Park: Soaking up kill puzzle set in Russia, where patrol investigator Hurt doggedly chases the case of 3 bodies buried in Gorky Park. Lots of twirls and turns, lucid environment with Helsinki tripling for Moscow harmed somehow by unconvincing romance and protracted finale. Cast includes William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, Ian Bannen, Joanna Pacula, and Alexander Knox. (128 minutes, 1983)
