Monday, October 19th, 2009One of the most adored stars of our time began as a “sweathog”. John Travolta’s first memorable role that launched him into the awareness of America was playing “Vinnie Barbarino” on “Welcome Back, Kotter” from 1975 to 1979. Since that time he has become one of the most excellent stars of our time.
In 1977, in one of his most remarkable roles, Travolta played Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. This film came out at the height of the disco era and it played a major part in that time. Tony Manero was the king of the dance floor at the local disco. He meets a young woman named Stephanie and they reach agreement to dance together in a competition.
Travolta was nominated for an academy award for Best Actor in a leading role, however he did not take home the award, but lost out to Richard Dreyfuss in “The Goodbye Girl”.
Shortly after that, in 1980, Travolta played along Debra Winger in one of the biggest hits of that time, “Urban Cowboy”. He played the part of Buford “Bud” Uan Davis, a cowboy from a small town who goes to the city and learns about love and life at a bar in Houston that is owned by the legendary singer, Mickey Gilley.
He meets a young cowgirl, “Sissy” portrayed by Debra Winger and the story follows his love affair with Sissy and how he tries to win a contest for riding a mechanical bull. Mechanical bulls were quite famous for some time after that movie. This movie can often still be seen on cable even now. John Travolta then had a few box office disasters and it was in fact many years before he had an additional hit and became popular again.
In 1994, he again had a starring role in a famous motion picture as Vincent Vega, a mob hitman, in “Pulp Fiction”. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, it also starred Samuel L. Jackson and Ving Rhames and Uma Thurman. This film achieved both critical acclaim and box office success.
Travolta was once more nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role however, this time the Oscar went to Tom Hanks for playing “Forrest Gump”.
